Foreigners must apply for a study permit if they are going to Canada to attend a basic or secondary school, language institute, college or university for more than six months.

As soon as you receive your acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), because obtaining a study permit can take up to three months.

Accommodation is not included in the cost of the course, but is often available on or near campus, in residences or dormitories where kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities are usually shared. Additionally, most ESL students have the option of homestay accommodation, where they live with a local family. Finally, in the housing office or in the campus student center there is usually a list of apartments for rent outside but close to the chosen Canadian higher education institution. Ultimately, the decision is up to you and your budget, but proximity to the place of study is an important factor to consider.

You cannot work if you are only taking an English as a Second Language program or any other short non-academic course that does not lead to a degree.

The best city to study English is the one that is most convenient for you. Find a city where you feel comfortable. Large cities have modern language schools and universities as well as easy access to services. Smaller towns can be more welcoming and focused on college life.
